Find the perfect winter coat before the cold settles in.
Yes, it's been years since Game of Thrones ended, but whenever the temperatures plunge and the puffy coats come out, I hear Sean Bean's voice ring loud and clear in my head: Winter is here. So now we're heeding the advice of the Lord of Winterfell and donning our very best, most protective (and stylish!) winter gear. That’s right, folks: we're preparing to plunge into winter headfirst by gearing up for any snowfall, bitter breezes, and all-around chill the season may bring. And the best way to combat the elements effectively is, of course, with a winter coat.
Don’t confuse this outerwear with a playful fall jacket or bomber. No, the best winter coats are heavy-duty, incredibly insulating, and, last but certainly not least, look damn good. And guess what? There are options galore. Canada Goose, of course, makes one mighty fine parka. There are puffers from Moncler, Nike, and The North Face. Woolrich and Uniqlo have element-blocking anoraks. And Arc'Teryx and Polo Ralph Lauren have coats that are too sleek to pass up. There's a slew of toppers, all at different price points, that will protect you from wind, snow, sleet, and all sorts of nasty weather. Just take your pick and bundle up.
Another piece of advice: It's best to cop these coats now because once the cold is truly here, getting your hands on one of these bad boys will definitely be a Battle of the Bastards.
If you need something to shield you from the wind and cold on your way to wherever chilly place you're going, Patagonia has you covered. The brand's sleek, waterproof parka looks and feels refined, but its bonded construction and insulated liner, made from recycled ocean plastics, ensure you'll stay warm and dry in winter weather. The cut is a bit longer, hitting just above the thigh for more protection.
Columbia is a well-known purveyor of top-notch cold-weather gear, and this Landroamer Puffer is proof. The foil-like lining and polyester filling help retain body heat for extra warmth but are still breathable so you don't overheat. The nylon shell is handy on damp days or if you're wearing this coat on the slopes.
Hefty, sturdy, and available in a range of colors, this puffer from Amazon Essentials really lives up to its name: heavyweight. At under 100 bucks, it's truly a steal considering that it's water-resistant, fleece-lined, and machine-washable.
The reviews for this Tommy Hilfiger coat are as good as it gets. From the durable nylon exterior to the fleece-lined stand collar, it's getting all the gold stars. It's packed with a warm down filling and features a drawstring hood to keep the cold out. Plus, it comes in so many colors (48 to be exact), which at this price point, grab multiple to switch up your winter outerwear wardrobe.
Before Canada Goose became the brand of choice for style-conscious urban dwellers, you could find it on arctic explorers and film crews working in seriously unpleasant conditions. There's a reason for that: The company's down-filled coats are both tough and insulating. And even if you're not venturing into the unknown, the 625-fill power down on this Langford parka is enough to keep you warm all winter. The coat also features an adjustable tunnel hood with interchangeable trimmings (sold separately), ribbed knit cuffs, and fleece-lined pockets for extra warmth.
Arc'teryx's area of expertise is the great outdoors, so it should come as no surprise that its parka is fully ready to handle whatever the elements throw at it, Gore-Tex exterior and all. The heftier price tag is justified with 750 fill down that's strategically placed for warmth, and synthetic fill in areas that tend to accumulate moisture. The hood is insulated too and an internal gasket to keep the cold out.
Based in Maine, L.L.Bean knows a thing or two about harsh winters, making sure that its coats (and its entire stock, for that matter) can stand up to frost-laden mountaintops. The Baxter State Parka keeps with the brand's high standards of warmth in the coldest of temps. The nylon shell is water-repellent. Inside, there's a 650-fill water-repellent down, four useful pockets on the outside, and three interior pockets. The faux fur trim on the insulated hood is removable and the coat as a whole can be tossed in the washing machine if you happen to find yourself in a muddy situation.
Aside from being the go-to puffer for kids of the '90s, The North Face's Nuptse jacket has plenty to offer. The 700-fill goose down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard and ranked among the warmest insulation the brand provides. And while the classic style is not entirely wind and waterproof, the Nuptse will keep you guarded against the elements on blistery days. The jacket comes in 13 different colorways and is packable without compromising on keeping you warm. A non-insulated hood is tucked into the collar to shield against wet weather or snow.
Breathable, windproof, and water-resistant, this premium three-ply micro-denier exterior and duck-down fill is built to combat the worst kinds of weather. It's also machine washable, in case you encounter stains and don't have time to go to the dry cleaner. But if you're in a pinch, the jacket is also completely reversible, transforming into a classic-looking quilted puffer on the other side.
Moncler is damn-near synonymous with high-end ski style, and for good reason. Sure, the label knows how to keep you insulated, but it also ensures you look great as you make your way down the slopes or the street. The lightweight wool shell is balanced on the inside with a warm, down filling, and a front closure that zips and snaps. and an insulated, detachable hood.
The Japanese mega-retailer has upped the warmth factor on this coat to make it the most winter-ready, with a faux fur hood and inner layer. As with all things Uniqlo, it packs in a lot of minimalist style for a pretty minimal price, too. But the lower price doesn't mean fewer features. Along with a down fill and padding, the lining is made of an aluminum print that helps retain your body heat as you wear it to keep the cold out sans the sweat that can happen when you overheat. The shell is water-repellent in case you get caught in a rain shower, and it has a looser fit overall if you want to layer up.
Isn't it the worst when your winter coat is so bulky and puffy, you feel like you can hardly move? Lululemon solves that problem with a puffer built to be on the go with you. This hip-length, water-repellent style is lightweight yet warm, with a relaxed fit that you can layer your thickest sweater under. Read all about how much we love this jacket here.
When it comes to bombers, you better believe that Alpha Industries, an OG maker of the style, will always deliver on durability. The sherpa-lined leather is a departure from the many nylon options on this list and even though that means a higher price tag, the features make up for it. Two straps on the collar adjust to keep cold breezes out and buckle straps at the waist make for a more snug fit to keep any cold from creeping in.
A cool, oversized corduroy puffer to put a little pep in your step on a chilly day. This is the perfect piece to style a fit with—unlike many other puffers, it works with your other clothes, not over them.It has a cozy polyester fill landing it in the middle of the warmth scale. So it's ideal for most winter days in the city, but it's not quite the right pick if you're hitting the ski slopes.
This one is for all the guys out there who either want a really sick fit pic, a really protective and durable jacket, or both. Carhartt brings its workwear into winter, baby. Much like the brand's other outwear pieces this one is water-repellent and wind-resistant, and the entire coat, hood included, is lined in quilted flannel for extra warmth.
Another great option from L.L. Bean is this classic puffer parka. It's the kind of coat you buy once and wear forever. The slightly-fitted style falls at the thigh and is roomy enough for a thick sweater or hoodie underneath. The 650-fill down on the inside is lightweight, but extra warm and has been treated so that it doesn't absorb moisture and clump together if it gets wet.
With almost two centuries in the biz, Woolrich is as classic as it gets. The brand's sleek Arctic anorak—with its hand-warmer pockets, detachable fur trim, duck-down filling, and rib-knit storm cuffs—will keep you warm and dry for many, many years to come.
For the more eco-minded outdoorsman, Axel Arigato crafted this puffy parka made with recycled polyester for the shell and reused duck-down filling. A drawstring waist gives the coat a more structured shape and the detachable hood cradles the padded stand collar for maximum warmth.
RL's contribution to your winter style game comes in the form of this cozy coat that combines fleece and nylon on top of a 650-fill-power-down filling. The storm guard-equipped hood zips away from the padded mock neck, and a drawstring hem cinches at the waist for a less breezy fit.
When you need extended protection from the elements, this longline Adidas puffer has you covered, literally. The hem hits right above the knee so the recycled polyester shell and feather fill will keep more of you warmer. And speaking of the shell, it's water-repellent to keep you dry on damp days. The detachable hood connects to the high-collar when you need the bonus coverage.
