Improving the safety of cyclists is a basic necessity in today's mobility environment. With this smart jacket, Ford is taking the lead.

Riding a bike among the pack of vehicles that surround you in the big city is, at certain times, a high-risk sport. That is why from Ford has created a prototype of a smart jacket for cyclists which will allow other vehicles to be notified of their manoeuvres on a bike andmake the coexistence of cyclists, drivers and pedestrians safer and more viable.

The smart jacket for cyclists developed by Ford has two spearheads. On the one hand, to send signals to the cyclists themselves as a navigation device and on the other, signal cyclists' maneuvers with lights so that both drivers and pedestrians are aware of the path that the cyclist will follow and avoid accidents.

To do this, when putting on the jacket, The cyclist must be connected to an application that will act as a navigator by synchronizing wirelessly to the user's Smartphone.. This is how, from vibrations in the sleeves of the jacket, you will receive the indications that should follow. A solution to those moments when the cyclist looks away from the road to view a navigator and follow their directions.

In addition to vibrations, lThe jacket incorporates acoustic and haptic interfaces with which the user can receive calls, messages and repeat navigation instructions. The fluminous anointings of the jacket will be responsible for signaling the maneuvers of cyclists to pedestrians and drivers. And it is The sleeves of the jacket light up depending on whether the bike turns left or right and it also has a flashing brake light on the back.

This network of interactive signals has been developed in the conceptual phase by the Ford Smart Mobility team in collaboration with urban cycling clothing specialist brand Lumo and mobility software experts Tome. Although the cycling jacket is only a prototype, Ford is currently in the process of obtaining a patent to begin production in the future or sell the license to other brands.

Meanwhile, the team of Ford in London has Tested the smart jacket on the streets of the British capital. An initiative framed within the Ford's "Share the Road" campaign, which aims to improve harmony between drivers and cyclists. Especially now that the bicycle continues to gain prominence and is positioned as key piece for mobility in large urban environments.
